Veg-Curious here

Ok I have to admit I was a bit hesitant about joining this tribe. But when I started reading the post and checking things out I just had to.
Thanks for starting it and keeping it going.
Right now I am not a vegetarian. But 10yrs ago I stopped eating beef and pork. Doing that just really boosted my energies. Once I did that I have often thought - whats holding me from taking the leap to full Veg. I honestly can see myself leaving all meats behind. But as I read in one of the earlier post - particularly for communities of color it is all about exposure of new and different foods.
I have a good friend/co-worker whose husband is a vegan chef and he makes the most appetizing delicious foods that no one would ever know is meatless and without dairy.
Another tidbit that I have read was a memeber who said that once they stopped eating meat, their acne cleared up. I am 33 yrs old and still get severe acne(UGHHHHH) so this definatly caught my attention. If anyone has any more info or discussions on that I would be glad to hear.

Ok enough of my rambling .. thanks again for the info and site...

Dear Bandu. I would hazard a guess that it also has to do with a certain level of peer pressure. As black people, it is sometimes difficult to let go of how things are done because of tradition. But that seems to be mainly coming from the mainstream black community, more than anything. As I posted on another thread, where I live, there are Muslim, African, and Carribean restaurants and cafes with a whole host of vegetarian
offerings. I can understand if the peer pressure might have something to do with it. I get ribbed by my family for being a veg. My mom was very miffed when she came to live with me for a while, when I refused to give up my diet, because she missed my meat-based cooking so much....until she tried my meatless-based cooking! Just do what you know is right for yourself, and look into finding some affordable veg alternatives.
They are out there and they are good! Maybe you might help someone else you know. This is about your health, not just looking good. Don't ever forget that. Good luck and long life....
